Top 10 - Things to Consider When Drafting a Constitution

December 6, 2012

The United States became a great country in part due to its framework. The Declaration of Indepdendence and the US Constitution are two of those framing documents. As Egypt prepares for a vote on their new Constitution, here are some important questions to consider.

1. Does your Constitution include proper checks and balances by different departments of government?
2. Are your branches of government elected by the people?
3. How can your government create a bill or amendment?
4. Are women equal?
5. Is every religion equal?
6. Does your president or prime minister have all the power or just some of the power?
7. Are lawbreakers treated rationally?
8. Are there reasonable term limits?
9. Does it clearly outline the government's powers and limitations?
10. Does it define the highest court's abilities and responsibilities?
